Mud Run

I saw that quote yesterday and thought about it over and over again…and again…and again….
I pictured my life and the things I capture. I used to capture everything. I used to capture all my friends and I no matter what we were doing. I used to take a million selfies and photos talking about weightloss and muscle gain and meal prep….I’d take photos at the gym, at the workout equipment, and “post-gym” photos where I was sweaty and gross. I took pictures of before an after shots and basically any single workout that I participated in was photographed and sent off into the inter-webs hoping for approval from well….YOU.

What did I fear to lose?
I feared everything. I had major vanity issues and insecurities with myself. I feared losing my fit body…I feared not being admired (even though no one was really thinking about me in the first place). I was borderline struggling with an eating disorder. Not the traditional anorexic/bulimic disorders but more of a body-dysmorphic disorder. I feared losing my party-friends. I feared leaving my horrible boyfriend-turned-ex for a long portion of time. I just feared being ALONE WITH MYSELF.

I meant well, I assure you….but as time has passed I have lost a lot of need for approval. I ask God for guidance every single day to help guide me in the direction of his path…and to help me become a beacon of light for myself and others. Along with this, every singe day at some point I internally tell myself: “It is no business what other people think of me”. I sometimes have to repeat this more than once throughout the day but I believe it helps me grow into a confident, radiant human being. Since my life changed one year ago, all I need to do is be the best, kind person I can be. Every day I have the opportunity to be better, be kinder and go on more adventures.

I think about the way things are now. The way I forget I have a blog, and forget that I ever cared that much for it in the first place. I have been diving into Instagram as the only thing I truly make use of these days….and why is that? Well I LOVE the photos without necessarily needing a lot of words and I love the beauty that shines through each profile as a little map to the users soul.

So what do I fear to lose today? Have you checked out my Instagram lately? It’s basically a “WHY YOU NEED TO VISIT AND HIKE WASHINGTON” Instagram:) I fear to lose the beauty of the world. I fear to lose my freedom. Some of you know I won’t really be on any form of social media soon and my photos truly show that. They show me bucket-listing my summer away! It’s been hard with my best friend recently moving to Texas but at the same time I think it’s helping me grow a little…okay a lot. It’s helping me be alone and accepting that. With what I photograph, it shows how much I LOVE being out in the fresh air, running the trails, visiting new sites, jumping in different lakes, spending time with my family and best friends and just LIVING. LIVING without caring about the meaningless junk of life. Getting off work/the computer and getting outside. All sober….so crazy I am one year sober this month.

A few months ago I made a list of things I wanted to do and here are some of the things I have done since summer started:

  • went skydiving
  • hiked trails at Mount Rainier
  • went paragliding off a cliff
  • went on a solo trip to DIablo Lake!!!! (this place I had never been to and have always wanted to go)
  • went for an overnight hike with a friend to Mt. Pilchuck and stayed in a fire tower
  • went on an overnight trip with my brothers and camped over Goat Lake
  • went trail running to Talapus and Olallie Lake
  • swam in Mason Lake at the top of Bandera Mountain and got to see fields of Beargrass!!!(a plant that flowers only every 5-7 years…insane and gorgeous)
  • visited Vance Creek Viaduct and hung my little legs off the bridge(which is the second highest arch bridge ever built in the US)
  • started saving for Bali ($1300 so far!)
  • visited the Chihuly Garden and GLass Museum

I can’t think of any others right now….but trust me I’m living. So grateful.
Life is so short. Create an adventure and take lots of pictures….you never truly know how much time you have. All you have is now.

October 1: The day i decided to make a change. 21 days in a row going Paelo, 21 days of exercise everyday.

They say it takes 21 days to develop a new habit.

Yesterday was October 1stand I vowed that for at least 21 days, I would go Paleo. It’s been almost 48 hours since this goal and I actually feel better than I have in weeks. Sometimes it’s difficult, because I love chocolate and ice cream so much…but my body feels better. I feel a difference, and I want change for once, I’m not getting any younger and our bodies constantly change. If you make small vows to change every day, you wont have to look back and wonder when you “lost it”.  Where you gave up and settled for what you’ve become. Always make changes, for staying the same is no fun at all.

Back to my point. 21 days. For 21 days I will go Paleo and I will work out every single day. On days that I need rest, I will go for a long walk. For any of you that feel this is too much, remember you don’t have to have an intense work out every single day. Or you can, but make sure that one or two of the days is a relaxing workout like yoga or an easy hike. The point is to get off your butt and DO something. Don’t spend your life revolving around your favorite television shows; don’t fit your schedule around drinking and parties, stop making EXCUSES. Make October the beginning of changing your life. At least start with committing to 21 days of doing more than you have before. Once those days are up you can go back to whatever you were doing…but I’m telling you that after 21 days of eating clean or going Paleo, and adding exercise everyday, you will see results and you will not want to stop.

I recently gained weight practically with a blink of my eyes from falling into bad eating habits thinking it wouldn’t affect me and boy was I wrong. I’m now having to challenge myself to BE BETTER and I feel that this is a great opportunity for all of you to also. My Paleo lunch on day 2

follow, motivated. I can’t write an entire blog update for every day but I will keep it updated on there. Feel free to also email me or message me on there if you want more motivation or have any questions.

I love that quote. It pretty much sums it up…In order to want something new, we must bring it to our lives. If we want to get rid of our bad habits and thoughts-we must give it up for 21 days and be more positive. Just work hard, eat healthy and try not to weigh yourself or stare at yourself in the mirror too much looking for results. You don’t want to discourage yourself because it wont happen overnight….but within a week or so it will show.

Little Tips before We Start:

-Commit to 21 days. you don’t have to do this your whole life, just commit to this….like Lent but for fitness;)

-Write down your goals for fitness. Where you want to be 21 days from now, by 2013, or a year from now. These next 21 days are just the beginning

-Write what you eat down. Keep track. I like myfitnesspal.com when i am log gin my food intake.

-Read up on eating clean from one of my other entries or go Paleo which helped my dad go from 207 pounds last Christmas to now being 160 pounds or so. He is still eating Paleo and feels more energy from changing his lifestyle.

-De-clutter the “old you” in the next couple days. Get rid of clothes you never wear, get rid of really bad food lingering in your kitchen. give it to the homeless or donate it somewhere, but its not for you. don’t temp yourself. Get ready for the new you.

-Follow me on Facebook or Twitter for daily motivation.

-Remember that i am in this as much as you are. I have trouble with committing to eating well. this is a challenge for all of us.

-Find a friend that will do it with you. and work out together…this will help you stay focused.

-Turn off your television

-HIKE!!!!!!!!!! For any of you that know me, this is my “happy place”. I like to make a list of hikes I want to do and see every week as an opportunity to cross one off.

-Get on Groupon or LivingSocial and find things you’ve never done before. I am addicted to these “deals” because it allows me to try new things I would otherwise never think of doing.

-Other workouts to try other than the basic gym:

  • hiking
  • biking
  • running
  • walking
  • yoga
  • hot yoga
  • pilates
  • pure barre
  • paddleboarding
  • snowboarding/skiing
  • surfing
  • ziplining(for fun:)
  • group sports
  • anything else you can think of! good luck!!!

I am officially obsessed with Cali Yoga and Banya 5. 

This has been a week filled with new experiences and a new hike! A friend of mine has been talking about Cali Yoga forever and how much she loves it! I finally did the introductory $25 dollars for 10 sessions and I fell in love. It’s a power yoga class that is set to only around 80 degrees and I can’t wait to go back this week.

Another thing that happened this week was hiking to Melakwa Lake. Melakwa Lake is connected to the Denny Creek trail but its 9 miles. It was well worth the 9 miles, the entire trail has a lot of different scenery from waterfalls, to wildflowers, deep valleys, rocks and boulders, to finally, the beautiful lake, which is crystal clear and ice cold. It was beautiful, I’m glad that I did a new hike before it got cloudy around here.

Our muscles needed tending after that hike so the following day we went to a place called Banya 5. I found my new addiction, which is hydrotherapy and must go here at least once a week. It’s a wonderful spa that helps your muscles and circulation.

 

We started off in a 200-degree sauna. The heat came from a concrete/brick oven that was made to heat muscles deeply which relaxes then and provides relief to stored tension. After that, we go into the cold plunge pool, which is supposed to “constrict skin pores and blood vessels that have been dilated from the heat to create an invigorating pumping action of the venous system to flush metabolic wastes and toxins”. After that, we went into the Turkish Steam room, which is 113 degrees and pumps heat through a fresh eucalyptus plant. This one was my favorite and I loved all the steam, after this we proceed to the cold plunge, and then into the salt-water pool which is 87 degrees and filled with mineral salt. After this we would rotate through all of them and there was also a hot tub, tea and water room as well as a nap room. It was really relaxing and is so important when you are working out a lot. Right after Banya, we went to Cali Yoga.

I swear, this whole week has been focused on detoxing. I love it because I have had such a bad month of eating horribly and not making the right decisions. I don’t know why it’s been this way but today I really feel the motivation to try harder. I spent 45 minutes on the cycle and had a rough leg workout. My legs feel like jelly. I decided to take “before” pictures today. I am in the worst shape I’ve been in, in a very long time. Tomorrow is the beginning of some new goals. I will take pictures every week to show progress but I am too embarrassed to post today’s pictures. I will wait till I lose some weight.

New Goal: I’m going PALEO starting tomorrow!!!!!

I apologize for the negative post previous to this one! Sometimes I feel like I am doing so well, and then I just let myself spiral out of control where I feel like all my hard work is put to waste and I get really hard on myself. I feel like all the training I have been doing has been making me bulk up…I know that is an exaggeration but I know what I like to look like, and how to be that way, so I decided I’m going to tone it down, work at my own pace with more cardio, and cut down my meal portion sizes. My trainer wanted me eating 5-6 meals a day and I feel like since I’ve been doing that, I am constantly anticipating meals when I’m not even hungry. I decided I will not time my food intake, and I will go back to “what I know” to be in the shape that I want. To get back to normal, and the size I’m comfortable with, the diet I went by was to eat a large breakfast with egg whites and a small green smoothie first thing in the morning…and then eat when I’m HUNGRY. When I am hungry I will still eat a clean diet, but I will not time myself like a little dog anymore. It’s exhausting thinking about food so much.  I think it’s what has been triggering my cravings and overeating.

I am home from vacation and I already miss Florida. I miss being with my best friend, laying in my bikini all day and going out on the town. I am so fortunate to be able to have gone, it was a lovely break from everything. Now that I am home I decided I am going to de-clutter my life and my emotions. I made a new vision board also. It needed some updating from the last one :)

I tried to put an emphasis on purity, the importance of love, my fitness passion, my need for thriving adventures like skydiving and zip lining, it emphasizes my need for hiking and travel, as well as art which I’m strongly passionate about. I have it saved on my phone and on my Mac’s wallpaper image. I want to see it everyday and remind myself of my goals. Also, for the first time in ages-I have a magazine clip-out of one of my fitness Idol’s above my mirror in my room. I’m hoping it’ll trigger morning motivation to stick to my goals. It’s an AD for Lean Body but has fitness model Kelsey Byers on it, which as I’ve said before, is a HUGE inspiration. It’s so important to have healthy fitness inspirations. Too many young girls think that it’s so important to be the skinniest girl in the room when you should be really focusing on the inside, and part of that is a healthy body that will prevent sickness and future medical problems.

So Day 1, back in my groove I started the day off with a green smoothie, worked, and after work I had a long Epsom bath with Michael Buble Pandora, my favorite sage candle, and gave myself a face mask. It was great, then I went to Zumba with my friend Ashley, did about 20 more minutes of cardio, then prepared chicken and salad for the week. I was still craving ice cream so I made a Chobani yogurt with a little nutella and a banana and now my ice cream craving is gone. I have a week of exciting workouts ahead of me. Tomorrow I think I’m going paddleboarding and if not, at least running Greenlake with another friend, then I am doing a lot of hot yoga, a few Zumba classes, a could body sculpt classes as well as hiking to Melakwa Lake. I will lose 10 pounds by mid-December. That is my goal and I’m sticking to it!

Thankfully I live literally right behind the gym I go to so it makes it easy to just walk over or stop on the way to/from work or school. A great tip for me is packing my gym bag the night before. I leave it in my trunk at all times and I also put extra gym clothes and extra Nike’s in there also in case I am around a great class in the area. Other things I leave in my trunk are extra socks, a camelbak, and water bottles in case I hit a hike or want to go kayaking somewhere far from home.

The key is to always be prepared. Always set yourself up for success without room for excuses.

Today I got off work early and my favorite Zumba instructor was teaching a class 30 minutes after work so I stopped there on my way home. My routine is to do a one-hour cardio class and weights after…then I take a shower and sit in the sauna for 10-15 minutes. It feels amazing after all that working out and after a shower.

Other Items I don’t want to find pictures for but I always bring:

  • Flip flops for the shower
  • A towel
  • A small hand towel for the machines
  • A bag of airplane-sized shampoos, conditioner, loofa and facewash/bodywash
  • Extra clothes
  • Phone for Tunes
  • Magazines like Self, Fitness of Shape!
 Remember that you have the ability to be who you want to be and if you want to change, you have to plan and prepare for what you want. Motivate yourself. Be yourself. Love yourself. Don’t worry about anyone around you and know that your health should be a priority and everything you do to help it, will further your future and make you happy.

 

I woke up bright and early this morning and felt super motivated to work out. I spent 30 minutes in a Zumba class that had a teacher I’ve never taken a class from before and the class was too easy so I left and did cardio for 45 more minutes on the machines. After that I did an hour of weight training. It has been a while since I’ve done weight training so I did an all-over workout with lower body, arms and shoulders as well as abs. I do abs every single day even if I don’t go to the gym. It’s been a long week of hiking, color runs, moving my furniture to my new place, and lots of Zumba classes this week. I can definitely see the difference within the week. I’ve been trying to eat better also but that has been a challenge because I practically am living out of my car for how busy I have been. I had lunch with one of my best friends today and got a salad with grilled chicken and no dressing. This is unlike myself, I love burgers and the place we went to has amazing burgers. But I need to stay motivated.

I need to start doing weights more often because I see faster results and I tighten up fast compared to just cardio. I love Zumba though and I will still do it because it makes me happy and sweat like crazy.

The Rest of My Week:

  • Thursday: Pilates@11:00am then Zumba@12:00pm
  • Friday: Lower Body Weights and Zumba@5:45pm
  • Saturday: Upper Body Weights and 5 mile run
  • Sunday: Rest
  • Monday: Zumba@5:45pm then Lower Body Weights

EVERYDAY I WILL DO ABS. EVERYDAY I WILL TRY HARDER THAN THE DAY BEFORE. It’s easy to give up but its much more rewarding to keep active and keep a routine. I have Survivor MudRun and Warrior Dash coming up as well as lots of boats and being in a bikini so I need to stay active!
